Recent
headlines have caused many women to
abruptly stop their hormone replacement
therapy, some without the knowledge
of their doctor. It's important to
point-out that the arm of Women's
Health Initiative study that ended
in July of 2002, involved synthetic
forms of estrogen and progestin.
Synthetic hormones are branded and
patented pharmaceutical drugs. Patents
allow drug manufacturers to price,
sell and market their prescriptions
as unique creations. To obtain a patent
for a synthetic hormone (or any other
drug), the molecular structure must
be modified. The result is a hormone
that looks very similar to a natural
hormone but, in fact, is very different
in structure and function.
Unlike branded drugs, Natural Prescription
Hormones cannot be patented. Natural
Prescription Hormones are compounded
to have the same molecular structure
and function to those naturally occurring
in men and women.
